This is not a thread to slag him off. I just read this on the transfer thread and actually kinda felt sorry for him. He has served us well and yes it is time to move on but that does not mean we have to hate him. At the end of the day it is not his fault if managers keep choosing him.

FWIW I recently spoke to someone that knows Nolan pretty well. Apparently he's absolutely gutted at the way the crowd (or at least the moronic part of our support) now react to him. He was really proud of the way they got a proper team together to get us out of the Championship and kept us up. He loves the club, so I'm told. So, for me, I'll always be grateful for what he has done.
I would keep him around to see out his contract and then shake his hand and let him walk on a free.
I know a lot will disagree with this but that's the modern West Ham fan!

I respect what he did for two seasons and respect him.
I also hate that people will single him out for booing.
But he should never ever be in the starting eleven he is simply not playing well enough I do not blame him either but the manager who chooses him over better players.

How can you hold all these views if you don't actually watch the games?
Nolan's performance was fucking disgraceful in both games against the Maltese waiters.
To see you try and defend him is pure comedy.

Oh and it was no real shock to hear him coming out with he would leave if he wasn't going to get in the team.
He's angling for a payoff and he deserves that to be honest.
His days as a PL footballer are over. Unless Bilic is actually a worse manager than BFS of course.

Possibly true. But his role in the team needs to be considered too - most of the time he has played as an AM expected to get forward. Chasing back has not necessarily always been part of his remit anyway, at least not to the extent of other deeper midfielders. I would guess that even at his age, he offers more defensively than Zarate would in that role.
What Bilic has to work out is whether he can contribute at all. I would guess that's a difficult question to answer because of him being the club captain - might the dressing room collapse without him?

That's what it is, his legs have gone, it's pretty much as straightforward as that really. As much as I want him gone I have never accused him of being lazy or unprofessional, I really don't see that in him, unless it has kicked in these last few games.

Agreed. But it's far more likely to be simply an age issue at 33, rather than him being lazy or unprofessional. I would never have picked him out as a particularly mobile sharp player even in his prime. Even in the championship he was never that involved in the play too much in that position he used to play - he just popped up running off the striker, as per Allardyce's instructions.
Another explanation for his poor performances could simply be bad form. In which case he might still be able to recover as a player. That's the best case scenario.

Alex - Agree in the main with that, especially the comment about making it hard for a manager to ignore him. I can see that.
It's not just about fitness as such though,ie being able to run around for 90 minutes, it's his sharpness, or lack of it, ie, he turns very slowly and can't move quickly over a couple of yards with or without the ball, at this level that makes a huge difference to him being of any use out there.

Personally I haven't seen him lack effort in matches, and I also don't see that there's any proof that his fitness isn't what it should be (considering his age). Some of the comments here and elsewhere seem to assume that either has been proven beyond doubt. It's also in a way an insult to Bilic and his staff to imply that either could be occuring.
I sympathise with both Bilic and the player here. Nolan is clearly one of those captains who is at the front of every line in training, a genuine leader - it makes him hard to ignore for a new manager. It's frustrating to watch from the outside, but it seems to me like Bilic has to go through the process of evaluating Nolan himself.

Was good for us first couple of seasons, however his legs have gone, he was never a world beater or a natural athlete and his body shape is not that of one either. Every player has their day and unfortunately for him he's had it, even he must see it. I bear no grudges and wish him well as he was a good captain for us.
I doubt any other prem side would sign him now bar maybe one or two of the newly promoted sides but I think when he leaves it will be for a championship club as even the likes of Watford are showing ambition.
Ex players, pundits, commentators and fans can see it so not sure why we would even consider keeping him on now and he really shouldn't even be in the squad for a competative game once the full squad is complete and available.

He is the club captain, earning £50k+ per WEEK, and he can't be bothered to get in tip top shape.
And we're supposed to respect him and feel sorry for him?
I don't generally give a fuck what players earn, but I do give a fuck when the captain of the club I support cannot be bothered to get in the best shape he possibly can, and put a proper fuck shift in. And I do give a fuck that fellow supporters don't seem to be bothered in the slightest, because he scored a few goals 3 seasons ago.
